Conflict between neighbours is damaging and costly. It can have a huge and negative impact on the quality of life of the people involved. In some cases it can escalate and encompass much of the local neighbourhood.
Mediation can help with a number of nuisance issues, for example: noise; pets; shared areas; rubbish; fences, hedges and boundaries.
Essentially, mediation is a supported conversation, ensuring the people involved retain responsibility for, and control over, any decisions that need to be made. They talk to and listen to each other, sharing their thoughts and ideas on what they would like to do about the situation they find themselves in. The support offered by the mediator is to:
• Facilitate the conversation, for example, by highlighting where they are agreeing and disagreeing with each other; and exploring the disagreements further to see what can be done about them
• Be a source of information to help the discussions, for example, clarifying any issues about the process or making suggestions if people are feeling stuck and have asked for some help
• Check in when things look difficult to see if people are comfortable with the meeting and, if not, what needs to happen to get the meeting back on track
Access to this service is by referral only. We work with a number of social landlords who purchase the service on behalf of their tenants.
